Burigi
Game Reserve is much bigger than Biharamulo, having a total size of 2,200 square
kilometers. The game reserve is located in the west of Biharamulo Game Reserve and extends
westwards to the Rwandan border (in Kihanga ward, Karagwe District in
Kagera. Half of Lake Bugiri ( to which the reserve owes its name from)
lies within the reserve .
It was
first established as a forest reserve, and gazetted as a game reserve in 1972.
The reserve is dominated by valleys, rolling hills, rocky outcrops and
cliffs. Swampy vegetation surrounded by reverine forest and papyrus beds
with some relict forest are to be found in large area of the reserve. Animals
found here are: shoebill storks, impala, eland, hippopotamus,
waterbucks, elephants, sable and roan antelope. Sitatunga can be found in
swampy areas and herds of eland lives in the surrounding hills. Elephants still
migrate between Moyowosi and Burigi Game Reserves
The poaching by the refugees, who are sometimes
assisted by the local residents, is depleting the population of animals at
Burigi Game Reserve.
